In today’s musical environment, one’s image has never been more important, and that of course translates into musicians’ videos. Everyone these days has “swag”- the cool “it” hat or tee can be seen on basically anyone walking down the street. That’s boring now. One thing that an artist can call his or her own though is the visualization of their music. And one thing I love about really well done music videos is that it can be something so personal, so true to the vibe and meaning of the song, something that not everyone can jack and water down. Like, I’m tired of being told to Comme Des Fuck Down. Let’s see something dope and new !
There are two videos that caught my attention today that I have to share with you all. They are from very different musical genres: one a Philly based rapper, one a UK based electro producer, but they both have visually amazing videos. Check them out below and please note, they may cause seizures!!
Featuring a haunting sample of Fiona Apple’s “Every Single Night”. Directed by Qarim Brown. Tight work. A little bit trendy with the angelic baroque theme that is so right now, but still very good.
Follow Forte on Twitter @Gilbereforte for more updates!
Utilizing clips from the 1950′s in the craziest way, this video by Cyriak blew my mind. The amount of work this took is unimaginable to my feeble mind. The song is a little creepy and the video, at least to me, is a testament to American consumerism. Or maybe it’s just a bunch of GIFs.
Follow Bonobo in Twitter @Sibonobo for more info, his music is chill and perfect pool side.
This video reminds me of “Civilization” by Marco Brambilla. Check out our coverage of the amazing video installation HERE.
Anyone who knows me knows I am obsessed with nail art. I’ve been going to the same girl (Sierra Storey @YouGotNailed) for over 3 years now, sometimes bringing in inspiration photos and ideas (even CD covers) and often collaborating with her on how we can take the designs to the next level. This is no new trend- people have been getting crazy and intricate nail art for decades, but it’s just now really becoming mainstream and more accepted. This is why I really love the new documentary “Nailgasm” (See: Official NAILgasm Twitter) directed by Brass. The booming nail art business is a breeding ground for female entrepreneurship- as majority of the artists are women, which is really dope. It’s so funny to hear people admitting that they’ve spent 3-4 hours getting their designs. Now I don’t feel so crazy.
“NAILgasm, the one and only documentary about the rise of Nail Art and the women’s entrepreneurial movement it has caused.”

Nasty Gal, the online retailer of fashion-forward clothing that many girls have come to check on daily has finally come out with their own line of edgy-chic clothes. I, for one, am excited. Nasty Gal consistently offers dope, non-boring choices for party dresses, shoes and jewelry, has great sales and understands the client. That being said, the team at NG is perfect for designing even more awesomeness.
The inaugural collection is is dubbed “Weird Science” and takes cues from 80′s teen angst, computer files, lots of metal and almost awkward details.
I honestly am not a huge fan of corset-style lacing and this collection has more of it than I would like. The leather shorts and the mesh moto jacket, for instance, would be much better and wearable without this detailing. I STILL AM LOOKING FOR MY PERFECT PAIR OF LEATHER SHORTS! It will happen one day…
Overall NG’s Weird Science is pretty solid- everything ties into the computer theme with the cute prints and witty style names. I think there is something for just about every girl (and some guys) in the collection. Prices range from $58 to $458.
Here are a few of my favorite peices:
This dress is the bomb.com- It’s classy and sophisticated and screams “I’m a boss” while remaning sexy and refined.
This cardigan looks so very comfortable and soft. I love the color blocking. The cut out elbows do nothing as ar as functionality, but are esthetically pleasing.
This jacket really doesn’t need any written reason why it’s on my list. LOOK AT IT. Knee length fringe and pebble grain leather.
Gotta love the name of this one. With everyone on Twitter and Instagram going hashtag crazy, it’s fitting. I am digging the A-line and pointy bustier type neckline. Paired with some witchy boots this dress really is a #Sweetheart
Watch the trailer from 1985′s Weird Science to see where it all started.
Lupe Fiasco’s newest single off his highly anticipated album FOOD AND LIQUOR II, the Great American Rap Album P.1 (highly anticipated by ME at least) is stirring up some controversy on the web and via Twitter. The song, written by the rapper to discuss an ongoing issue with regards to demeaning and confusing words used in society today, has received back lash from a few media outlets who have reduced his enlightening message as a poor attempt at challenging hip-hop. Spin magazine started their critique of the video with the words, “Why must we continually endure Lupe Fiasco’s half-baked conscious hip-pop?” Naturally Lupe Fiasco had something to say about the negative feedback, as would any person who only has positive intensions of reaching to his fans and portraying a positive message. He took to his Twitter to lash back at the magazine stating,:
Spin Magazine really be on one…so
#BitchBad is “half- baked conscious hip-hop” huh? I see why you call yourself “Spin” cuz that’s all u do— Lupe Fiasco (@LupeFiasco) August 24, 2012
Lupe continued on to tweet statements in regards to the music magazine’s review and even started a hashtag among his fans in protest to the article, “#BoycottSpinMagazine“. I’ve got to say I personally was taken back by the magazines comments, which seem more to me like actual hate and un-supported negative commentary than actual critique.
Being that the name of our site is 2DOPEBITCHES, the words of this song only remind me what me and thousands of other women are faced with everyday in society. From the Bible’s passages to your mothers own words, words themselves have a way of confusing us and manipulating us due to their definition and interpretation. Due to our own individual experiences and education, we can each interpret one sentence several different ways. When it comes to the word BITCH, generally from its beginnings it has been deemed a negative defamatory word. Used towards women to describe their negative, demanding, annoying ways, or just something you don’t like about them – it’s the ultimate disrespect. In this new generation of Hip-Hop culture we are faced with a confusing illusion as the word has been flipped to describe exactly what a respectable, independent, strong-minded, and powerful woman might be: a bitch. So if your female boss reprimands you for not making your sales goals she’s a bitch, but if you see an attractive woman walk into your store with sexy clothing and a beautiful face she’s a “bad bitch”? This is exactly what Lupe wants you to think about and ,through his song and video, does a great job of discussing.
Lupe Fiasco has sold thousands of records, toured internationally, started his own clothing brand, been on several magazine covers, and worked with the best producers in the industry; his opinion is valid and his points are too.
In the case of the name 2DOPEBITCHES, it only strengthens what Lupe discusses. Something negative and demeaning is now taken as a symbol of empowerment. Maybe we are negative, maybe we are demanding, maybe we are annoying, and maybe you don’t like us. But in the end just how you respect your female boss, you will hopefully respect what we are doing as women and the effort we make to express ourselves though this website and in the end see the word BITCHES in our name and see something positive.
Funny thing is I discussed this very issue a year ago on my guest post for The305.com, where I stated that being a BITCH is looked at as a diva or even a brat in the industry, but if Rick Ross is the exact same way he’s looked at as a BOSS. Read my article here and tell me your insights.

Our good friend Gianni Lee has been making waves in the fashion world for a while now with his dope brand- Babylon Cartel- which is definitely worth checking out. But he is no simple man. Aside from fashion he does graphic design, throws crazy parties (with Maddecent no less) and is a pretty great DJ. He’s been putting together mixes- not just songs he likes- he’s been curating a sound- Trill wave.
Trill Wave is a mash-up musical style that encompasses gangsta rap, chopped and screwed, dub step, Philly dance, EDM and everything in between. His mixes include the likes of A$AP Rocky and Space Ghost Purrp and features new-comers like Ryshon Jones, Flatbush Zombies and Paris Artelli.
The Trill Wave mixtape was a collaborative effort between Gianni and Panda Reemy of ANMLHSE, another dope ass clothing brand out of Philly. Check them out as well. With these two musical dudes’ minds at work they selected the trillest music, then compiled it, created the cover art and brought you something no one else has!
Listen to his Trill Wave and Trill Wave DEUX mini mixes below and download the mixtape if you love it like we do.
Follow Gianni @GianniLee and Reemy @GRLSLOVETHECRLS on Twitter so you know when the next mixtapes and parties drop. Hopefully there will be a party in Miami soon !
