All it takes is one lazy Google search to realize that if you missed this, you missed a monumental moment in time for DC, “don’t put me in a box” multi-music-genre loving kids and well, music in general. The festival that lasted over 12 hours on a warm and partly cloudy day last Saturday was a testament to what a few young people can really pull off with the right tools and passion. DCtoBC , the 3-person collective (who are from the Nation’s Capital and went to Boston College,) really did throw one of the best music festivals to date. I mean, there was a slew of local artists, some nationally known and some up and comers who definitely kept the crowd entertained, live art, awesome food trucks (and a CUPCAKE TRUCK!!) and not one damn fight. Everyone was in a neo-hippie state of mind- the electro people and the hip-hop people not being so different.
I managed to snap a few pictures of the performances, the talent just chilling and a few cool people along the way. I regret to inform you that I didn’t (well forgot) to get a Trillectro flavored cup cake but I did do a front flip on the moon bounce- that counts for something right?
Anyways, take a look at my photos below and check out the 2dopebitches full Facebook album for more flicks !
Oh, I wore my grill that, along with Norma’s gold fangs, ave become the beacon of 2dopebitches.com and I swear I grilled and showed off my crazy nail art possibly all weekend. No complaints though !
Oh, by the way, this dude with a FEATHER DUSTER was straight up getting down to Beyond Modern’s set:
We are always talking about getting up off your ass and doing what you want. What better way to express this than an awes0me music festival full of amazing talent and trill surprises, completely put together by young Gen-Y-ers who do what they want to do?? Enter TRILLECTRO- the genre-mashup music festival taking place THIS SATURDAY August 11th in the nation’s capital.
trillectro is the first event of its kind within the city limits of the district of columbia.
on august 11th, 2012, thousands from DC, maryland, virginia and beyond will come together in the name of hip-hop and electronic music at the HALF STREET FAIRGROUNDS, an untapped venue right outside the Nationals Park and across the street from the Navy Yard metro stop. 20+ performances from the most promising emerging artists in the nation, all of whom, if you asked them, couldn’t categorize their sound very simply or put themselves into a box. besides, lanes are for lames, and nobody likes being pigeonholed. as featured band phony ppl said,
“we, just do our thing / i rap when i want, and when i want / i will siiiiing…”
that’s the mindstate of every act on this bill – DJs, producers, rappers, singers, and everything in between. believe you’ll see a whole bunch of all of that at trillectro.
what makes trillectro different than any other awesome music festival that you’ve heard of or been to? trillectro reflects the new generation. it’s the age of DO IT YOURSELF – DIY. whether it’s launching and successfully funding a kickstarter, or creating and branding your accessories line on etsy. we don’t have to wait for anybody to do anything for us because we can do it ourselves. that’s how DC to BC was created, and that’s how the talent recruited for this festival has been so successful. it’s not some big corporate machine coming into DC trying to harness “cool” for a quick buck, either. it’s put together by a group of kids who love music and want to share the good sounding stuff with the masses. this is an event for the doers, by the doers.
Your 2 dope bitches will , of course, provide as many photos of this event as possible, as I, Aja am going home to Maryland for my dad’s birthday and will be joining in the fun over at the Fairgrounds. I personally can’t wait- the bill is amazing- I mean, ScHoolboy Q, Body Language, Casey Veggies, Flosstradamus (who I saw at the Roots Picnic) along with Tabi Bonney, Beyond Modern and Flatbush Zombies? Are you kidding?? Gianni Lee Dj’ing along with DJ Wonder and some people I’ve never heard of (but I trust the musical taste of the DCtoBC cats so I’m sure I’ll be happy) is sure to be a good look. This show is going to be amazing. I am so proud of Modi and the DCtoBC team for throwing this together!
People, all you need is a passion and a decision not to give up when shit gets difficult and you can do basically whatever you want. Just sayin’.
what should you expect?
music. a group of cool kids, nerds, jocks, weirdos, freaks, geeks, artisans, hipsters, hippies, yuppies, youngins, YG’s, OG’s and maybe even a couple triple OG’s that are so colorful, they make a united colors of benetton ad look bland. toss in some girls and guys who are dressed in heels and brand new kicks and didn’t get the memo that this is a music festival, not a fashion show. old friends and new friends. locals and transplants. more music.lights. speaker stacks. moon bounces. tasty ass food. tank tops and tankinis. short shorts. worn-in sneakers and flats. snapbacks. pins. stickers. glowsticks. gold teeth. whistles. lighters in the air (or smartphones – it’s 2012). cornhole. life-sized board games. enough space for hip-hop and EDM heads alike to spin around, dance, and rock out as you please. enough tweets, instagrams, videos, facebook posts hashtagged #trillectro to make this historic event live on for a while – a social media explosion if you will. even more music. vendors trappin’ out of their booths. heavy customization (shout out to young veggies). attendees engaging with the freshest brands and newest innovations. DJs and producers bumpin’ a mixture of their favorite jams and their own musical creations. live bands feeding off the crowd’s vibes to give the performance of a lifetime. hands waving in the air. peace. love. happiness. the past. the present. the future. all in all, the energy of an awesome music festival in obama’s backyard.
that’s trillectro. an endeavor aimed at reshaping and redefining DC’s stuffy, conservative culture. see you there.
Ahhhh I’m so excited for this damn event, I even read through the FAQ’s and everythang. People, especially people in the DMV, you should go to this festival. I mean, is there something better for you to do this Saturday? Be serious- catch me there and ask for a 2dopebitches pin while you’re at it!!
On the second part of my mini adventure I moseyed on over to my home state fo Maryland (via the Chinatown-Chinatown bus to DC whose wi-fi SUCKS by the way) to chill with the family I neglect by living at the bottom of the country. I spent quality time (hours) with my mom, dad, aunt Bunny, sister Autumn and her two daughters Tigerlily and Nahla. Yes those are their real names.
We stopped of at the Warf fresh from the airport to get my favorite home food staple- Maryland Blue crabs. It’s always a dope time when the family sits around the newspaper covered table cracking open freshly cooked crabs. I drank beer at the table wich was cool and weird since I always feel like a little kid when I’m home.
I also got to spend a little time with friends in DC, stopping by the always dope Good Life DC party at Recess party that goes on every Tuesday via the Rock Creek Social Club. If you’re in the DMV, certainly check out the movement! Good people there- it was definitely dope running into Marcus 1/2 of Beyond Modern and miss Londyn Kouture herself!
Check out some pictures from my travels. You gotta admit my nieces are probably some of the cutest kids in history. Oh by the way, DC/MD REALLY needs to update all of their old, 70′s rococo ass metros!
“My World” remix by Mick Marx and Iggy Azalea lends a pretty dope twist on the Aussie’s original song. Sometimes her draggins words can be a bit tiring, so it’s nice to hear rapper spit some sharp and sometimes funny lyrics of the bass heavy beat.
This song is included on Mick Marx (of the duo Beyond Modern) side project “Keep Your Heart To Yourself” which will be released online sometime late February. Keep an eye out for this DMV artist’s solo project as well as more from Beyond Modern! Listen to the “indie alternative hip hop” in the mean time.
Check out some past love that has been shown to these DC representers!

Check out the video footage of Don’t Wuwwy: Kendrick Lamar Live In DC this past August. The whole shindig was thrown by our boys over at DCtoBC. Definitely, definitely check out DCtoBC, The Great Progression is among us! I’m telling you, there is some serious talent coming our of DC, and this proves it. Check out the video and what was to be said about the night. Judging by the Vimeo, if you live in /around DC and you weren’t there, you weren’t anywhere, quite frankly.
The event featured Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, Phil Ade, Phil Da Phuture, and Ashton Travis.
From the man, Modi:
We wanted to do something ambitious and unheard of in our neck of the woods, so we brought independent hip-hop talent Kendrick Lamar to DC’s 930 Club, one of the most renowned venues in the nation. With two weeks of promo, we were able to sell out the 1200 person venue and leave a lasting impact on the entire city. August 12, 2011 was an incredibly historic night in our eyes.
The DC area is on the cusp of a cultural explosion, and things like this are bringing that bad boy one step closer to blowing up. We’ll be doing our part to ensure that it happens.
Shout out to the entire Top Dawg Entertainment team for making this all happen, as well as the 1st Impressions Studio team for documenting epicness in video form.

I really love what the whole DCtoBC and The Great Progression movement are doing- I even have a typed letter from them still hanging on my fridge from when they sent me stickers last year. It’s so crazy the realm of people getting out there and doing stuff, just seeing who knows who, who rolls with who and what type of people are doing what. Sounds super vague when I type it up, but it all makes sense in my head. We here at 2dopebitches.com are just super humble and happy to be around these awesome people.

the new mixtape coming straight out of the 4-Block (again, DMV reppin’) by DH 1800 is a great example of what happens when you mix perserverance, dope beats, great production and raw talent together. it has something for everyone- well, everyone who likes rap, i suppose.
my favorite joint on “Straight No Chase” happens to be “Fly High”- the lyrics are deep and the beat is just too frig.
please download this tape, give it a few listens
